چکیده

In one of Leonardo Da Vinci's notebooks, an experiment is described where strengths in tension are measured for various lengths of wire. The notebook indicates that the results of these experiments were that longer wires were weaker than shorter wires. This result de®nes classical mechanics of materials. This con ̄ict has been explained as a note-taking failure by Leonardo. This short note develops an alternative explanation, based on the likely heterogeneity of the mechanical properties of the wire and elementary probability theory. This latter explanation has implications for the diculty and delays experienced by early investigators into the mechanics of materials.

On Applicability of Some Indirect Tests for Estimation of Tensile Strength of Anisotropic Rocks

The tensile strength of rocks plays a noteworthy role in their failure mechanism, and its determination can be beneficial in optimizing the design of the rock structures. Schistose rocks due to their inherent anisotropy in different foliation directions show a diverse strength at each direction. The purpose of this work was to compare and assess the tensile strength of phyllite, which was obtai...

An investigation of tensile strength of Ti6Al4V titanium screw inside femur bone using finite element and experimental tests

The geometric optimization of orthopedic screws can considerably increase their orthopedic efficiency. Due to the high geometric parameters of orthopedic screws, a finite element simulation is an effective tool for analyzing and forecasting the effect of the parameters on the load-bearing capacity of different types of screws and bones. Thus, in the present study, the tensile strength of a typi...

Evaluating the Semi-Circular Bending Test for HMA Mixtures

Semi-Circular Bending (SCB) Test is a fast and accurate three-point bending test, which was originally used in rock mechanics. SCB test is going to be an accepted test method for asphalt concrete pavements. Different asphalt-mixture property-values such as tensile strength, stress intensity factor and fatigue can be obtained by this test. In this study, static and dynamic tests including SCB te...

Tree Branching: Leonardo da Vinci's Rule versus Biomechanical Models

This study examined Leonardo da Vinci's rule (i.e., the sum of the cross-sectional area of all tree branches above a branching point at any height is equal to the cross-sectional area of the trunk or the branch immediately below the branching point) using simulations based on two biomechanical models: the uniform stress and elastic similarity models. Model calculations of the daughter/mother ra...

Determination of Tensile Strength and Crack Growth of a Typical Polymer Concrete Using Circular Disc Samples

Cracked and un-cracked Brazilian disc specimens subjected to diametral compression were used for conducting fracture toughness and tensile strength experiments on a polymer concrete (PC) material. The value of mode I fracture toughness (KIc) was determined from the center- cracked Brazilian disc and the indirect tensile strength (σt) was obtained from the un-cracked Brazilian disc specimen. The...
